Fun facts
The government of Botswana has consciously chosen to refrain from developing mass tourism on account of the country’s ecological vulnerability. As a result, 17% of Botswana has remained fully unspoiled, which is why there are many beautiful national parks and game reserves. Of course, 85% of the country has been swallowed up by the Kalahari desert.
There are only a few consecutive cloudy days in Botswana, so you can enjoy a clear blue, sunny sky all year long.
The country has a very low population density: less than three persons per square kilometre.
Visitors from Europe can obtain a tourist visa at the international airports and at the border if they will not be staying in Botswana for longer than 90 days. You will need a passport that is valid at least six months after your date of departure and has two blank pages. Inoculations are not mandatory, but a Hepatitis A vaccination is recommended.
Sights
Botswana is world-famous on account of the Okavango Delta, an almost entirely unspoiled nature reserve with many wild animals. Around 200,000 large mammals spend the winter here. In summer, they migrate to the vast plains to graze on fresh grass and leafy trees. The Delta is home to more than 400 pieces of birds and 70 species of fish.
Other areas of interest are the Kalahari Desert, Chobe National Park, the Makgadikgadi Salt Pans and the Nata Bird Reserve. The Kalahari Desert is the largest trip of sand in the world. This is where Chobe National Park is located: it has one of the largest concentrations of wildlife in all of Africa.
The capital city, Gaborone, is a fast-growing and modern city, where you will find plenty of culture. Further to the north you can explore Francistown, one of the oldest cities in Botswana and the site of Africa’s first Gold Rush. Another city frequented by tourists is Maun, the gateway to the Okavango Delta and the Moremi Game Reserve.
From the northernmost cities, Kasane and Kazangula, you can cross the border to Zimbabwe to admire the majestic Victoria Falls.
