Fun facts
The Namibian desert is the oldest in the world. You will also find the world’s highest dunes here. The northern part of Namibia is the most densely populated, and is also its cultural heart. This is the traditional home ground of the Ovambo tribe.
The Caprivi Strip is located between Angola and Botswana. The name of this thirty-kilometre strip was changed into the ‘Zambezi Region’ in 2013 to help forget the German oppression. Numerous wild animals populate this strip.
Namibia has approximately 300 hours of sunshine each year. Considering the pleasant summer temperatures, the coast is the most popular destination during the summer months. Winter is the ideal time to explore the hinterland.
To visit Namibia all you will need is a passport that is valid at least six months after your date of departure. No visas or inoculations are required.
Sights
You will find around twenty national parks and game reserves in Namibia. The best-known is Etosha National Park, which is located in the northern part of the country. Namib-Naukluft Park is one of the largest nature reserves in all of Africa. Namibia’s most important cities are its capital city Windhoek and the coastal towns of Swakopmund and Walvisbaai.
In the Twyfelfontein valley and the impressive rock formations called the Spitzkoppebergen in north-western part of Namibia you will find the rock paintings of the San people.
You have probably heard of the Skeleton Coast along the Atlantic Ocean, where you can discover famous ship wrecks.
Moving southwards, you can visit the heart of the Namib: the Sossusvlei. This is a clay valley dotted with brick-red dunes. Further south you will find the Fish River Canyon,the largest canyon in the world but one. The town of Lüderitz is nearby, as well as a number of genuine ghost towns like Kolmanskop.
